{"id":436,"date":"2015-07-13T22:32:38","date_gmt":"2015-07-13T20:32:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/ECCWORDPRESS\/2015\/07\/13\/car-rental-in-europe-better-information-and-more-protection-for-consumers\/"},"modified":"2023-05-24T19:50:08","modified_gmt":"2023-05-24T17:50:08","slug":"car-rental-in-europe-better-information-and-more-protection-for-consumers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecc-netitalia.it\/en\/news\/car-rental-in-europe-better-information-and-more-protection-for-consumers\/","title":{"rendered":"CAR RENTAL IN EUROPE: BETTER INFORMATION AND MORE PROTECTION FOR CONSUMERS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-434\" style=\"float: right;\" title=\"Car rental in Europe: better info\" src=\"https:\/\/ecc-netitalia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/car-rental.jpg\" alt=\"car rental\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/>Car rental companies have agreed to review how they treat customers following a joint action from the European Commission and national enforcement authorities\u00a0led by the UK\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/competition-and-markets-authority\" target=\"ecc\" rel=\"noopener\">Competition and Markets Authority (CMA)<\/a>\u00a0and supported by the European Consumer Centers (ECC-Net) which\u00a0had seen complaints related to car rentals increase sharply in the last two years.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a03 April 2014 national enforcers from the EU Consumer Protection Cooperation Network,\u00a0the European Commission, and the European Consumer Centre network, met with the trade association, Leaseurope, and other industry representatives to identify the main issues affecting consumers across Europe when hiring a car and to discuss how to address them \u2013 for example, by improving pre-contractual information and reviewing standard terms and conditions and practices.<\/p>\n<p>Today the\u00a0CMA has published its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ecc-netitalia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/files\/pubblicazioni\/Short-term_car_rental_in_the_European_Union.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>\u00a0on short-term car hire in the European Union. The report summarises the CMA\u2019s analytical work on the consumer problems arising in the sector and the CMA\u2019s view of how the relevant legislation applies.The report also sets out steps that companies and consumers can take to make the sector work better and includes the commitments 5 major car rental businesses will make to certain practices.<\/p>\n<p>Avis-Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt will ensure more clarity on insurance policies and tank refuelling options, fairness when handling damages and more price transparency.<\/p>\n<p>Vera\u00a0Jourov, EU commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality said: &#8220;<em>Booking a car online, renting it in one country and returning it in another is very simple today.\u00a0Unfortunately, car rental terms and conditions are sometimes too vague or lack clarity. Consumers are too often left with unplanned extra costs.Five major car rental companies have now pledged to improve their information policies and make their terms and conditions fairer for consumers.
